IN BRIEF: Baltimore-born
and bred Scooter Smiff, 13, might do it all—dance, rap,
write, choreograph and act—but he says that he’s just
a “regular kid.” But “regular” he is not;
his first taste of the big time came at age 5 when he performed
on Showtime at the Apollo. The big turning point in his career
came when Scooter met R&B superstar Chris Brown. “Chris
was looking for a 2nd kid for his Grammy performance, we were
introduced and the he rest is history,” states the smiling
teen-ager.
Scooter was quickly signed on to perform on the Grammy Awards
with Chris and soon-there-after went on to dance and rap on Chris’
recent year-long “Up Close and Personal” tour. He
also performed in Chris’ “Kiss Kiss” and “Wall
To Wall” videos.A studio was installed on Scooter’s
tour bus so the teen sensation could record his debut album and
not miss a beat on tour. Scooter is also an accomplished actor
who played Daniel on the third season of the hit show Lost and
makes his dramatic feature flick debut with Gardens Of The Night
where he plays a abused child named Young Donnie; the film will
be released this winter.
Scooter’s first single is the title track “HEAD OF
MY CLASS” featuring Chris Brown and Fresh To Def; the CD
is set for an early ’09 release & features production
work by The Underdogs (Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks), Dre and Vidal
(Ciara, Usher, Mary J. Blige), Carlos “L.O.S” McKinney
(J. Holiday, The Dream), Herbert and others on his debut album.
While Scooter is ready to kick-start his run at the charts and
already shines on the small screen, he remains humble and reminds
other teens to keep their priorities straight. “Something
I would like to tell teens is that if they’re a musician--or
whatever they may do-- they should remember that their parents
always support them, so they shouldn’t be afraid to talk
to their parents,” says Scooter, whose name is a mashup
of the first names of parents Michael and Shontay. “I know
that a lot of teens are kind of rebellious sometimes, but just
keep your support behind you and keep God number one and follow
your dreams, don’t ever give up. That’s been my stronghold
for the last five years.” You can obtain more knowledge
